The kaupapa behind Wānanga Pakupaku is sharing teacher practice/ideas/resources/knowledge/skills (you get the idea!) within our rohe. We have SO many amazing kaiako and learning from each other is a rich part of belonging to the Kāhui Ako. Think of it as internal professional development. Workshops are run by our kaiako on areas of interest.
Initially, we chose some workshops based on what we saw as important focus areas in our Kāhui Ako. After each Wānanga Pakupaku, we:
Put out a survey to gather feedback from attendees
Review and analyse all feedback for themes that went well and/or constructive ideas going forward.
Sort the ideas for future workshops…what is in high demand. We try to cover as much as we can.
Look for suitable presenters - Principals are often asked if they have a superstar in certain areas.
Each workshop is unique and will look different. The commonalities are that these are 45 minute sessions, which may include some time for Q&A or discussion. They are a taster session for the given content - to give teachers ideas, motivation, inspiration, and the opportunity to connect with others who are interested in similar areas.
You will not be coming along to a workshop and walking out with instant solutions, a plan that you can walk straight into the class and teach, or all the answers. You may walk away with some resources or links to resources or strategies to try. It will vary depending on the workshop content. Remember the presenters are volunteering their time to plan and present - so give them a big mihi for their efforts.
